Well, off at 06.00 for the 2nd Day of the
Silverstone Classic weekend, 25th, 26th and 27th July. Only 4
cars attended the event from our region on the Saturday, those of us that
drove up from sunny Weymouth arrived and were parked in the Porsche area by
08.30.
Before preparing my car for the Pride of Ownership concours,
I took time to chat to the other participants and look at their prestigious
cars. They were all in different states of preparation; from covered in
flies, like mine, from the drive up, to those under cover, having been
prepared on Friday. The whole day was very sunny, far too hot to spend any
time buffing and cleaning nooks and crannies………
By mid morning there were 100s of Porsches
on display. The whole Porsche parked area was broken down into Porsche
models, a sight to be seen. The local dealerships displayed all the current
Porsche models, as well as some pre-owned stock.
PCGB had the club shop open, as well as a very needed refreshments area,
both seating inside and out with hot and cold drinks at very pleasing
prices. It was a good place to catch up and decipher what the event had to
offer, as well as club and member gossip. I hope that last line didn’t sound
rude!
The Concours had new sponsors, Farécla, car care specialists.
They were providing some
stunning glass
trophies. Unfortunately the judge’s eyes were favouring some new contestants
this year and I fell dramatically from favour, not getting placed. ……….
So roll on the National Event 2009, and another crack at the concours whip……
(Sorry just had to make a sentence up to use the word whip)
Once the concours was judged, three of us took the chance for
a Helicopter ride, £30.00 for 5 min’s sounds a lot, but the views over the
event were outstanding, and the rush of the lift, banking and descent were
priceless. We also enjoyed stunning air displays throughout the day from the
Yakovievs Aerobatic team, Hawker Hunter (1950s Jet Fighter), and the not to
be missed Spitfire from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.
There were many interesting stalls to look
over and spend your pocket money on, from Scalextric models to car parts,
car artwork, and even woman’s fashion!
Stunning racing on the circuit as well as past Rally cars going through
their paces and doing some incredible slides……
The icing on the cake at the event,
(sorry a 2nd place to the helicopter ride) was the visit to the
ALL NEW Porsche Driver Centre, we were glided to the building and
surround tracks, cosseted in a Cayenne (405hp) GTS. . (There was a fleet of
them going back and forth).
On arrival I spoke to Martyn Molyneaux, PCGB Chairman, about his new
appointment. I was pleased as a member and an active player in the Dorset
region, to hear his fresh outlook and approach for taking the club forward.
That he has been a RO and a long standing member, should provide him with
strong foundations routed in the club, for its members, after all, we are a
club.
It seemed to a be smaller event than last year with fewer car clubs and
there could have been more loos…….
Having said that its was a very good event, something for all to do
throughout the day, for both car fans and their families.
