What a difference to last year’s concours, which was held within the
wonderful grounds of Sherborne Castle, where unfortunately, no matter our
commitment, the weather was more suited to launching a yacht at the
Southampton Boat Show. As where this year I woke (7.30) looked out to a wet
road and clouds, but by 9am when I had to head off, . . it had all burnt
off the road and sunshine R26 members had booked, prevailed.
The helpers and gofors arrived by 09.30 to set up the parking and display
areas, pegging out and erecting….. gazebo’s. We were so pleased to see the
tangible support by Fiona (John Drake) and Porsche Centre Bournemouth. PCB
displayed a monster of muscles, in the form of a Turbo Cayenne and stunning,
Carrera 4s.
A team of us
helped Fiona set out her stall of Zymol products, before we opened the gates
at 10.30.
Most of the Concours entrants arrived early, all were parked
by 11.30. Lots of banter surrounded the wheel cleaning and buffing.
Geoff (in buffing, not judging mode) kept pushing my cleaning ability’s, as
he popped back and forth from the judging nerve centre to do stealth buffs.
Luckily I had R26 informants, to warn me.
Many who attended, were concours virgins, I for one, was
pleased to help them learn. At one point Tref, YES, Tref, was seen to be
cleaning his Porsche, this is not a typo, he was cleaning his Black 944, he
even cleaned the windows with my fast glass……… He was later rewarded for
this mammoth task, being awarded the Judges Discretionary Award.
Steve
was OVER THE MOON to be awarded 3rd in the visitors class,
Steve’s wife, Doreen took my arm as she was so proud of the place he has
secured, she was wanting pictures to share this experience with her family
abroad.
Geoff
and his team of judges did a relaxed, good, thorough and fair job of marking
all the cars under the glare of the blistering sun.
On this end of the cars lined up, you will see Brett’s …….,
he was awarded 3rd in the Entry Level Class, this was a double
whammy, as he cant take the p out of concours contestants any more, or can
he….. knowing Brett, he wont let the cotton bud joke making lie……….
The
concours enjoyed the support of many visitors, from as far as Swindon in one
direction and Bournemouth in the other. The other direction was restricted
by the fact we were on the coast!
We had a family attend our concours who had brought their
Husband, Dad, Grandad, as a surprise for his 65th birthday, he
had dreamed of owning a Porsche all his adult life and he was over the moon
to be offered a run out (as long as he was happy not to make his 66th!)
with one of our members, then PCB kindly offered to take him out in their
all NEW 997 C4s, as expected, he returned with a smile from ear 2 ear.
I like to think that we made ALL the visitors and their
family’s welcome, I for one, encouraged them all to attend our regions
meetings at Southern Counties Lodge (most know as the Clay Pigeon).
I did inform a group of ladies that many other ladies attend, and one said,
what about the men….
Well, all are welcome, and a friendly environment for children with the
wonderful play area located at our venue, with the bonus of cheap, tasty and
well presented meals for those who are coming direct from work.
