Saturday 30th August 2003

What a way to start the day

The day started very well watching people carrying on with setting up their stands and cars, as well as many owners arriving for the day, also a FULL ENGLISH went down well.

I popped round the front display and borrowed a bucket from some extremely helpful PCGB member so I could wash off the Friday C4s dirt from the drive up.

I chatted to John McGirl as he prepared his 996 for the front 911, 40 years display. He was extremely keen to have my car on the 996 registers stand, I was pleased to help out and felt very honoured to have been asked.

I went off and joined a guy washing his Ferrari, yes I did say Ferrari, many people came up and commented on how they loved C4s in guard’s red but didn’t have the nerve to buy it, Seal Grey, Blue or Silver being the main options voiced.

When I handed the bucket back and went back to my car I was confronted by a pre-stressed scooter man who asked where I was going, (to cut a long story short he banished me to the fields yonder)
To say I was a 200% disappointed owner of two stand tickets, (996 register and R26 region) knowing they had spaces as I had popped there prior to driving round.

Well, sense prevailed when I had walked all the way to the 996 register, shocked members came to my rescue and the car was proudly positioned at the front of the stand, the fact of being late more than design.

At the 996 register I meet many interesting people, John McGirl and Robin Cook were particularly welcoming. After another dust off it was time to take in the sights.

After a walk round ¼ of the arena my wife and I went on a Helicopter ride, flying between 800 to 1000 feet for about 10 minutes, a great experience with terrific views. We were hoping for a tethered balloon ride but they had packed up for some reason, perhaps too windy to be safe.
We took in another ¼ of the stands / attractions before even more interesting stories from more PCGB members. So many proud owners of every Porsche model, members of different ages as well as diverse backgrounds and careers.

Early evening it was lifting to see many hot air balloons take off from just behind the rear of the displays.

We then prepared for the Champagne and speeches prior to the evenings dinner, David Newton and Dr. Wolfgang Porsche were among the speakers, very interesting views on the cars and the history of the 911 and the PCGB. As we prepared for dinner the PCGB members and guests raised £1000.00 for charity which was a real back down to earth moment amongst the glitz and glamour of the evening.

At the dinner I was interested to speak to the other 8 PCGB members on our table, after the dinner we enjoyed a very colourful firework display before returning to dance or just enjoy each others company.
